How it works

How to write a prescription in Docna

Five steps from an empty pad to a prescription in the patient's hands, on a laptop, a tablet or a phone.

  1. 01

Choose the patient, or load the last prescription

Pick the patient from your list, or add a new one with name, age, gender and phone without leaving the page. For a follow-up visit, Docna offers the patient's last prescription with its date, medicine count and diagnosis, plus up to four older ones. Load one and edit what changed: a follow-up set as an interval is worked out again from today, and the interaction check runs again on the loaded medicines.

  2. 02

    Record symptoms and diagnosis

Add symptoms as chips and tap one to set its duration and severity. Diagnoses come from a searchable list with your recent ones a click away, and each can carry a note and a qualifier such as to rule out, suspected or follow up. Common chronic conditions such as diabetes and hypertension add choices of their own, like controlled or uncontrolled. Or dictate the visit and let Docna fill these fields.

  3. 03

Add medicines with dose, timing and duration

Search by brand or salt and pick the medicine. Set its type, dose, timing, food instruction and duration from quick chips, or type your own. As soon as two medicines are on the prescription, Docna checks them for interactions while you carry on writing.

  4. 04

Add tests, advice and the follow-up

Advise investigations from a searchable list, add instructions from a library of more than 1,000, and set the follow-up in one tap: 3 days, a week, a month, a year or a date you pick. Your remarks print at the foot of the prescription.

  5. 05

    Preview, then print or send

A live preview shows the finished prescription, and if you print on your own stationery it shows how the prescription lands on the page. Choose the patient's language, then save, or print and save in one step. With automatic sending switched on, the patient receives the prescription on WhatsApp as a PDF shortly after you save.

Capabilities

What Docna's e-prescription software does for you

Everything an Indian OPD prescription carries, with the checks a paper pad cannot make.

Medicine search built on Indian brands

Type a brand or a salt and each result shows its composition and form, so you know exactly which strength you are picking. US names find their Indian equivalents: levothyroxine brings up Thyronorm and Eltroxin, which are listed as thyroxine, and acetaminophen finds paracetamol. A form filter narrows the list to tablets and capsules, syrups, injections or creams.

Results while you type

The most common brands are built into the app, and the full catalogue of more than 4.3 lakh medicine presentations is kept on your device after a one-time download in the background, so results appear as you type. When the Indian catalogue finds few or no matches, Docna also searches the US FDA's international list, and anything else can simply be typed in.

Your own medicines come first

Every medicine you have prescribed before, including brands you typed in yourself, comes first in the search with a Yours tag and the dose, timing and duration you last used beside it. Pick it and the dose is filled in the way you last wrote it. Your most recent medicines also sit just below the search box as one-tap chips.

Dose, timing and duration the Indian way

Tablets, capsules, syrups, drops, injections, inhalers and more, each with units that suit it: ml and teaspoons for a syrup, ampules for an injection along with the route and site, puffs for an inhaler. Timing uses the shorthand pharmacists read, such as 1-0-1 and 1-1-1, or plain words such as after breakfast and after dinner for patients who find the numbers confusing. Food instructions and durations from one day to a year finish each line.

An interaction check that tells you when it could not run

With two or more medicines on the prescription, Docna checks the combination and lists each interaction as high, moderate or low, with a recommendation. When the check cannot run, the screen says so and offers to try again, so a missing check is never shown as no interactions. Each medicine's active ingredient is also checked against active US FDA quality recalls. Saving with a high severity interaction, a Class I recall or an unchecked list asks you to confirm first.

Dictate the visit

Tap the microphone and speak for up to two minutes. Docna fills in the symptoms, diagnosis, investigations, instructions, follow-up and remarks, adds them to what you have already entered, and shows what it heard so you can check it. Medicines are never filled from voice: you add those from the search.

Your letterhead, signature and layout

In Settings, choose a Classic, Letterhead or Compact template, one of seven fonts, A4, A5, US Letter or a custom paper size, the margins and the header alignment, and draw your signature with a finger, a mouse or a stylus. If you print on your own pre-printed letterhead, Docna leaves its header off, and the margins place the prescription in the blank space under yours.

Old paper prescriptions, filed in seconds

Take a photo of a paper prescription or upload an image, and it is filed on the patient's record. Run the optional analysis to read the medicines, diagnosis and instructions off the page, then review and edit them before saving. When a patient sends a prescription photo on WhatsApp, Save as Rx files it from the chat. A filed prescription stays on the chart and is never sent back to the patient automatically.

Languages

Prescriptions in Hindi, Tamil and six more Indian languages

You write the prescription in English. Pick a language in the preview and the patient's copy changes to it, on screen and on paper, while medicine names stay exactly as you wrote them for the pharmacist.

Hindi and Marathi

Symptoms, diagnosis, investigations, instructions, durations and your remarks are translated, and the headings on the page, from symptoms to the next visit, are printed in Devanagari too.

Tamil, Telugu and Kannada

The same patient copy in the script your patients read every day, with every section heading in their language and a line that marks the copy as a translation.

Bengali, Gujarati and Punjabi

Patients who read Bengali, Gujarati or Punjabi get their instructions and the length of each course in their own script, with medicine names, doses and 1-0-1 timings left exactly as you wrote them.

What stays in English

Medicine names and compositions, dose numbers and units, 1-0-1 notation, dates, your name and your signature stay as written, so the pharmacist dispenses from the original. Timings you write in words, such as after dinner, are translated for the patient.

In practice

How e-prescriptions fit a busy OPD

Docna keeps the prescription you are writing as a draft, so a phone call or a change of page does not cost you the visit: come back and it is restored, with a note of when you left it. Your recent diagnoses and medicines sit one click away, and Print and Save stores the prescription before the print dialog opens, so a cancelled print never loses it.

Sending can take care of itself. After you save, Docna sends the prescription to the patient on WhatsApp on its own, after a delay you choose in Settings, long enough to catch a typo. New accounts start with this switched on and a one-minute delay. From the prescription list, Send delivers any prescription to a patient with a phone number on file, and once it has been delivered the button shows when and will not send it again.

For a prescription you write, the patient's WhatsApp copy is a clean A4 page headed with your clinic's name, even when your printed copies go onto pre-printed paper. Every prescription is saved to the patient's record, on a Prescriptions tab beside their lab reports, bills and online consults, and any prescription you write can be opened as a print page and saved as a PDF at any time. When you set a follow-up, it joins your follow-up list and a reminder appears in your notifications on the day.

Two more things save time at the desk. Switch on the invoice section and the bill for the visit is saved with the prescription. And when a patient asks for something cheaper, Medicine Price Compare lists brands with exactly the same composition and form, cheapest first.

Who it is for

Who the prescription software is for

  • General physicians with a full OPD

Doctors who write prescription after prescription and want the common ones to take a few taps, with the patient's copy ready before they leave the room.

  • Specialists with long term patients

Physicians, diabetologists and other specialists whose follow-up visits mostly repeat the last prescription and adjust a dose or two.

  • Clinics whose patients read a regional language

Practices where patients follow their instructions better in Hindi, Tamil, Marathi or another Indian language than in English.

  • Doctors leaving the paper pad behind

Clinics that want every prescription, old and new, on the patient's record and on the patient's phone, instead of in a carbon copy book.

Pricing

Simple plans, priced in rupees

FAQ

Prescription software: questions doctors ask

What is prescription software?

Prescription software lets a doctor write prescriptions on a laptop, tablet or phone instead of a paper pad. In Docna every prescription is structured: symptoms, diagnosis, medicines with dose, timing and duration, investigations, instructions and follow-up, printed in your own layout and saved to the patient's record.

Can I search medicines by Indian brand name?

Yes. Search by brand or by salt, and each result shows its composition and form. US drug names find their Indian equivalents, so levothyroxine finds thyroxine brands. Medicines you have prescribed before come first, with the dose you last used, and a medicine that is not listed can be typed in by hand.

Does Docna check for drug interactions?

Yes. Once two or more medicines are on the prescription, Docna checks the combination and shows each interaction with its severity and a recommendation. The check is a screening aid for your judgement. If it cannot run, the screen says the check did not happen and offers to try again, and saving asks you to confirm.

Can patients get their prescription in Hindi or another Indian language?

Yes. The patient's copy can be printed in Hindi, Marathi, Tamil, Telugu, Bengali, Gujarati, Punjabi or Kannada. Symptoms, diagnosis, instructions and durations are translated, medicine names and doses stay in English for the pharmacist, and the copy is marked as a translation.

Can I print on my own clinic letterhead?

Yes. Switch on pre-printed letterhead mode in Settings and Docna prints only the prescription, without its own header, so it lands on the blank part of your paper; set the top margin to clear your printed strip. You can also use the Letterhead template and add a signature you draw on screen.

How does the patient receive the prescription on WhatsApp?

As a PDF document on WhatsApp. It goes automatically a short delay after you save when automatic sending is on, or from the prescription list with Send. For a prescription you write, the patient's copy is a standard A4 page headed with your clinic's name, whatever your print settings.

Can I add a patient's old paper prescriptions to their record?

Yes. Photograph or upload the prescription and it is filed on the patient's record, with an optional analysis that reads the medicines, diagnosis and instructions for you to review. A photo the patient sends on WhatsApp can be filed from the chat with Save as Rx. Filed prescriptions are never sent back to the patient automatically.

How much does Docna's prescription software cost?

Prescriptions are included in every Docna plan. Pro is ₹4,000 a month with 40 prescriptions a day, Enterprise is ₹8,999 a month with 150, and every new account starts with a 1-month free trial on the Pro allowance.
